Pleasure and Pain — Building a SL Campus

Incorporating virtual worlds into traditional educational environments has been under the radar at the college that I work for. To be honest it has been avoided because it is so difficult to provide Administrators with the precious “metrics” needed to gain support and funding.

I just returned from the Campus Technology conference in Boston, and this topic seemed to touch a majority of the presentations, and certainly the keynote speakers.
I work for the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and have the pleasure of building our Second Life Campus. Well.. pleasure and pain.

I had no idea how much time I was going to be investing into this project. I have built, and now torn down, three full campuses that I have built each with a completely different spin on how to attempt to set up an educational environment within a virtual world.
There are so many possibilities that I had become absorbed in beginning to learn how to build out of necessity of not having the budget to buy what I wanted and also because I simply can’t find the items that I want the way I want them.

I haven’t posted here in ages because of this project, so I decided that this is what I would like to write about now. I mean this is what I am spending all my time doing these days. :p

I want to share the tools that I come across for educational use, and share the decisions that I am making as Im sure there are others out there faced with the same dilemmas. Maybe some of you out there will even share a few things with me.
